Looking for healthy holiday dessert recipes that taste decadent? The winter holiday season is a time for joy, celebration, and indulgence, but that doesn’t mean your desserts have to derail your health goals. You can enjoy festive treats without skimping on flavor by swapping a few ingredients and incorporating nutrient-packed options.

Keep reading for 10 dietitian-approved treats that use wholesome ingredients. These may include natural sweeteners, high-protein bases, and fiber-rich add-ins to create indulgences that satisfy your sweet tooth without sabotaging your weight loss (or weight maintenance!) goals. I’ll also share some easy baking swaps to boost the health profile of your favorite sweet treats so you can recreate your own healthier yet delicious versions.

1. Apple Cranberry Crumble by Skinnytaste

Any holiday wouldn’t be complete without a good dessert. Some desserts can pack hundreds of calories, fat, and sugar, but apple cranberry crumble by Skinnytaste is a lighter option that doesn’t skimp on flavor.

Skinnytaste.com is one of my favorite recipe websites. I often recommend it to my nutrition clients alongside the meal-planning app we use called EatLove. I love both of these options as they provide recipes that are truly healthy and easy. EatLove is on another level as you’ll have access to a personalized plan for yourself based on your needs, goals, and preferences.

This apple cranberry crisp is one of the most delightful healthy holiday dessert recipes. It combines the tartness of cranberries with the natural sweetness of baked apples and a crunchy oat-nut topping. It is topped with just a bit of brown sugar, and the maple syrup can be omitted to reduce sugar intake. With fiber from the fruits and heart-healthy fats from the nuts, it’s a lighter, wholesome treat perfect for festive gatherings.

Dietitian tip: Decrease or omit the maple syrup and brown sugar to further reduce calories and sugar intake. For a lower-sugar replacement, you can use monk fruit sweetener. I love Truvia’s calorie-free brown sugar (I add it to my oatmeal instead of brown sugar), which is brown sugar-sweetened with Stevia.

    2. Peppermint Almond Flour Brownies

If you love that festive peppermint flavor, these almond flour brownies are irresistibly fudgy, chocolatey, and infused with refreshing peppermint. The almond flour base ensures these brownies are ultra-moist and naturally gluten-free, a perfect treat for anyone with dietary restrictions.

Topped with festive peppermint chunks, these brownies deliver a nostalgic holiday flavor. However, they’re lighter and more nutrient-dense than traditional recipes.

These brownies also stand out with their balanced blend of rich cocoa and almond flour’s nutty sweetness, which adds healthy fats, fiber, and vitamin E, an essential vitamin for immunity, to every bite.

Dietitian tip: While almond flour is traditionally gluten-free, always check nutrition labels to be sure if you have a severe food allergy.

      3. Cranberry Apple Baked Oatmeal

Apple desserts are my favorite, as they always have a warm, cozy feel. This cranberry apple baked oatmeal can be served in single-serving squares for a hearty, make-ahead healthy holiday dessert recipe.

Since it’s naturally sweetened with apples and cranberries, this dessert contains no added sugar. This is the type of sugar linked to inflammation and weight gain. It’s also packed with fiber from oats, apples, and cranberries to support digestion and maintain balanced blood sugar levels. This can prevent those blood sugar crashes that make you feel hungry again.

Dietitian tip: Make this recipe ahead of time to soak up more holiday time with your family!

        4. Ellena’s Peanut Butter Cookies

These 6 ingredient cookies are made with creamy peanut butter, which provides healthy fats, protein, and even a bit of fiber. They are decadent but contain less than 200 calories per cookie. This recipe creates a simple, lower-sugar dessert option by using just a small amount of brown sugar and skipping flour. Perfect for satisfying sweet cravings without overindulging!

The peanut butter also replaces the need for real butter – so you won’t find any in this recipe! Pair with a glass of milk or fruit for a more well-balanced peanut-buttery dessert or snack.

Dietitian tip: To reduce the calorie and sugar content even more, try using Truvia’s Stevia Sweetener and Brown Sugar blend, which is completely calorie-free.

          5. Pumpkin Oat Chocolate Chip Cookies

The best healthy holiday dessert recipes contain seasonal ingredients like pumpkin. These pumpkin chocolate chip cookies deliver a delightful blend of warm cinnamon spice, rich chocolate sweetness, and subtle pumpkin flavor in every bite. This fall-inspired cookie is made with antioxidant-filled pumpkins, providing immune-boosting vitamins A, C, and E.

It also provides more fiber than a traditional cookie, as it has rolled oats. The recipe incorporates nonfat vanilla Greek yogurt and pumpkin puree, adding moisture and a boost of protein and vitamins while keeping the cookies lower in fat.

Dietitian tip: These cookies are a bit higher on the calorie end than others on this list, so portion control is key. Just take one and walk away, or enjoy half of one with a handful of berries for added volume.

            6. High Fiber Chocolate Chip Cookies

Chocolate chips are my absolute favorite dessert (other than brownies), and so I was intrigued when I found this delicious but more nutritious version. These high-fiber chocolate chip cookies offer a wholesome blend of nutty sweetness from dark brown sugar and semi-sweet chocolate chips. These flavors are paired with a hearty texture from rolled oats and white whole wheat flour.

Including ground flaxseed boosts the fiber content (which you don’t even taste). This added fiber supports digestion and keeps you full, so it’s easier to eat less. With 5 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber per serving, these cookies strike a satisfying balance between indulgence and nutrition, making them a delicious choice for a more mindful treat.

Dietitian tip: Swap the semi-sweet chocolate chips for dark chocolate chips for more indulgence and greater antioxidant power.

            7. 3-Ingredient Vegan Peanut Butter Cookies

If you’re pressed for time (who isn’t, right?) and want to keep your baking simple, these cookies are the perfect solution. These vegan peanut butter cookies only contain 3 ingredients – ripe bananas, peanut butter, and oats. They can also be made in less than 15 minutes from start to finish. It doesn’t get any easier than that!

These are packed with healthy fats from the peanut butter, fiber, and vitamins from the oats, and potassium from the bananas. These cookies are nutritious but taste delicious.

Dietitian tip: For an allergen-friendly version, swap peanut butter for almond or sunflower butter.

              8. Cranberry Bliss Bars

While this is the third cranberry dessert on our list, I don’t think you can get enough of this festive flavor during the holiday season. If you’re all cookied out, these cranberry bliss bars offer an indulgent alternative to cookies and are a cinch to make.

Made with almond flour, these bars provide a boost of protein and healthy fats. Then, the coconut oil and maple syrup offer natural sweetness and a moist texture. Topped with Greek yogurt cream cheese frosting, these bars deliver an indulgent taste with added protein, making them a delicious and satisfying option for those looking for a lighter yet flavorful dessert.

Dietitian tip: Make these ahead of time to save time and store them in the freezer for 1-2 days before use.

                9. Easy Cottage Cheese Chocolate Pudding

If you haven’t yet jumped on the cottage cheese bandwagon, you’re seriously missing out. Even if you don’t like the texture of cottage cheese, this easy blended cottage cheese chocolate pudding has a perfectly smooth consistency. The natural sweetness and smooth texture make it a delicious and healthier alternative to traditional chocolate puddings, and it can be served at your holiday table in single-serving jars.

It packs a rich, indulgent flavor from unsweetened cocoa powder and honey, while cottage cheese adds a boost of protein for a satisfying and nutritious treat. With only 181 calories per serving and 13 grams of protein, it’s a guilt-free way to enjoy a chocolate fix that supports muscle repair and satiety.

Dietitian tip: Don’t keep cottage cheese on hand? Plain Greek yogurt is a great high-protein substitute.

                  10. Easy Vegan Truffles (No bake)

These truffles are another healthy vegan no-bake dessert that is incredibly simple. With only two ingredients (chocolate chips and avocado), these truffles are arguably one of the easiest, best holiday desserts you’ll ever make. Plus, no baking is required, and they take less than 15 minutes to make.

Packed with healthy fats from avocado and customizable with toppings like hemp hearts or coconut flakes, offering a balance of indulgent flavor and wholesome ingredients in every bite. Once cooled, roll each ball in your favorite toppings, such as crushed pistachios, shredded coconut, or sprinkles for a lovely holiday treat.

Make sure to use ripe avocados that are soft enough to mash well but not too ripe where they are brown.

                    Healthy Baking Swaps

Here are 5 simple ingredient swaps when making quick healthy desserts:

                    • Swap Butter with Greek Yogurt or Applesauce: Replace half (or even all) of the butter in recipes with unsweetened applesauce or plain Greek yogurt. This adds moisture and reduces calories while maintaining a rich texture, and works especially well in breads, muffins, and cakes.
                    • Opt for Almond Flour or Oat Flour Instead of All-Purpose Flour: Almond and oat flours add a slight nutty flavor and extra nutrients, like fiber and protein, making baked goods slightly healthier. You can use a 1:1 ratio in some recipes but check consistency adjustments. These flours can absorb moisture differently depending on the recipe.
                    • Try Stevia Instead of Granulated Sugar (Baking): Using no-calorie, natural sweeteners like Stevia in baked goods can offer a rich flavor with fewer calories and less of a blood sugar spike. Baking stevia can often be used cup-for-cup instead of sugar, resulting in a similar texture and flavor.
                    • Use Less Sugar Than the Recipe Calls For: If you prefer the taste of real sugar, keep in mind that many baking recipes call for more sugar than you need. For example, I add half the amount of sugar the recipe calls for in my banana bread without impacting the texture or flavor.
                    • Replace Oil with Pureed Veggies or Avocado: Adding pureed pumpkin, sweet potato, or avocado can cut fat and add gut-friendly, filling fiber to your dessert. It also adds a rich and creamy texture. To do this, substitute oil with equal parts pureed vegetable or mashed avocado in brownies, cakes, and breads.
